Philip L. VanderMyde

Philip L. VanderMyde, AIA, USNR(Ret.) passed away at home in Southern Shores, NC on September 16, 2012. Beloved husband of forty-three years, Phil is survived by wife Terry, son John VanderMyde, daughter Maslin Seal, daughter-in-law Heather VanderMyde, son-in-law Stephen Stilwell, granddaughter Skyler Seal, and grandson Ike VanderMyde. Phil was preceded in death by his brother Paul A. VanderMyde and daughter Jane Stilwell.

Phil was born in Sterling, Illinois to Louis John VanderMyde and Anna Pals VanderMyde. He graduated high school in St. Ansgar, Iowa. Spent freshmen year at Central College in Pella, Iowa and then enlisted in the Air Force for 4 years during the Korean War.

A lifelong lover of good design, Phil’s 40-year career as an architect spanned from government contracts in the White House and Pentagon to a private practice specializing in historic residential renovations and additions in Alexandria, Virginia. He attained his degree in Architecture from the University of Minnesota, after which he moved to the Washington area in 1959, and served as a civilian employee of the US Navy. He was offered a direct commission into the US Naval Reserve, attaining the rank of Captain before retiring in 1991.

Phil was active in many professional and charitable organizations, including the American Institute of Architects, and the Rotary Club of Alexandria, where he served as president in 1994-95. He was an elder at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House, and a member of the Knights Templar. After moving to Southern Shores in 1998, he continued his architectural practice, was active in Duck Woods Country Club, and served as president of the First Flight Military Officers Association.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to the American Heart Association.
