Clifton Hines Moore

Moe Moore, 86, of Point Harbor, departed from this life at Harbor’s Edge in Norfolk, VA on September 23.  He devoted his life to the betterment of his family, his business, and his community.

Moe was born on December 9, 1926 to Nora Bass Moore and Judson Tyson Moore in Rocky Mount, NC.  Five siblings predeceased Moe:  Vernice Lane, Thurmond Moore, Dorothy Bland, Jarvis Moore, and Jimmy Moore. He often contributed his success as an adult to an upbringing centered on their faith, their integrity, and their contribution to the family during great hardships.

Moe graduated from East Carolina Teachers College with a business degree.  He joined his father-in-law, Grady Griggs, and his brother-in-law, Edward Griggs in a corporation that prospered into the company known today as Griggs Lumber.  He considered the growth of the company during those 51 years- from 1954-2005- a tremendous accomplishment.

Also, Moe had a passion for serving Currituck County and northeastern North Carolina. He had the ability to work as a leader in civic clubs and on boards that made a difference in the future of the area. Moe especially enjoyed the challenge of starting projects and seeing them come to fruition, like the first Fire Department and Rescue Squad in lower Currituck County.  In addition, he was honored to join the local board and corporate board for Planter’s Bank as well as a Trustee of East Carolina University.

The love of his life- his wife, Mildred Griggs Moore, predeceased him in 2011. They lived life together and to the fullest. Also, their son, Mike Moore, sadly preceded Moe’s death in 2006.

Left to cherish his memory is a daughter, Martha MacDonald and her husband Bruce; granddaughters, Caroline McCall, Hilary Smith and her husband Joel; grandsons, Grady Moore and Ryan Moore; daughter-in-law, Vickie Moore.

A celebration of his life will be held at Duck United Methodist Church on Sunday, September 29 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following at Duck Woods Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family feels that memorial gifts to any one of the following places would honor Moe Moore’s legacy:  Duck United Methodist Church, Moe Moore Scholarship Fund at Currituck County High School, or East Carolina University Foundation, Inc. at Office of Gift Records, Greenville Centre Room 2211, 2200 South Charles Boulevard, Greenville, NC 27858.
