Herbert John Meyer

Colington- Herbert John Meyer succumbed to Alzheimer’s Disease on December 8, 2010 at his residence in Colington Harbour, surrounded by the family he cherished. Herbert was was born August 6, 1938 in Bayonne, New Jersey in Hudson County. He was the son of the late Emil Meyer and Margaret Schmarje Meyer.

After completing his secondary studies, Herbert earned his BS Degree in electrical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Herbert then joined the United States Navy and served bravely during the Bay of Pigs era. Herbert eventually transitioned into the Central Intelligence Agency where he completed numerous international assignments as a communications engineer. He spent many years serving in the Philippines, accompanied by his soul mate and wife Carol and their family. In 1989, Herbert’s distinguished career culminated with the awarding of the Career Intelligence Medal presented by the Director of the Communications. Herb and Carol eventually retired to Colington where they resided together since 1997. Herb enjoyed the company of his good friends, fishing, a daily bowl of ice cream, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Left to cherish Herbert’s memory is his wife of 46 years, Carol Miksza Meyer; two sons Matthew Meyer of Eugene, Oregon; Daniel Meyer and wife Carla of Spring Hill, Tennessee; two daughters, Amy Ashman and husband Michael of Martinsburg, West Virginia, Donna Hodgert and husband Jerry of Lynchburg, Virginia; one brother, William Meyers f Port Orange, Florida; nine grandchildren: Zachary, Elijah, Cal, Harry, Baylee, Krissy, Sam, Jason and Emma; three sisters-in-law, Inez McMahon, Linda McComb, and Red Merlette; two brothers-in-law Gary Miksza, and Stanley Miksza; several cousins, nieces, and nephews, and a host of extended family members, and dear friends.

Calling hours will be held at the Gallop Funeral Services Chapel MP 16 in Nags Head Saturday December 11, 2010 from 6 to 8 in the evening. The funeral and committal ceremony will be held Sunday December 12, 2010 at 3 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be private. The Reverend Steve Siegrist will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Herbert’s honor be forwarded to the National Alzheimer’s Association at 919 N. Michigan Ave. Suite 1000 Chicago, Illinois 60611, the Gem Center at PO box 3601 Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948, and/or Dare County Home Health and Hospice PO Box 1000 Manteo, NC 27954.
