James J. Martin
James J. Martin, 65, died Saturday, May 10. He was born in Lewiston, Maine and was a resident of Southern Shores, N.C. by way of California and New Jersey.
Jim was a 1966 graduate of South Plainfield HS, and received his BA & MEd Degrees from Trenton State College where he was a member of the Pi Alpha Delta Professional Fraternity. He served six years in the United States Army National Guard. Jim was an Industrial Arts Educator for 34 years in the Woodbridge Township School District before retiring to the Outer Banks.
He was an extremely talented and creative man in many genres, which was evidenced by his Watercolor Paintings, Woodcarvings, Bonsai pieces, and the numerous awards he earned at local art shows. He was a member of the Baum Center Watercolors Class, President of the Albemarle Bonsai Society, a member of the Virginia Bonsai Society, and a member of the Currituck Master Gardeners.
He enjoyed spending time outdoors in his yard with Joe Daskalakes, when he wasn’t at the beach surfing with Frank Keiser. Jim had a deep passion for life and lived his to the fullest; he cherished everything from the smallest leaf to the tallest tree and everything in between.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Marcella J. (Tabisz) Martin and daughter Julia M. Martin; parents Donald J. and Henriette P. Martin; seven younger siblings Dennis Martin, Daniel Martin, Thomas Martin, JoAnn Corsaro, William Martin, Elaine Barbera, and Mark Martin; aunt Hazel Travers; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He is also survived by Loi, Tammy, Benjamin, and Colin Tran who were like family to him.
A funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church, Kitty Hawk on Friday, May 16 at 11 A.M., followed by a reception in the parish hall to celebrate his life.
