Vernon R. Bruffey
Vernon R. “Pete” Bruffey, 75, of Martin’s Point, NC; died May 23, 2016 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife Carol Monacell Bruffey; his children Michael Bruffey, Melody (Vernon) Harris, Matthew Bruffey; and step-daughters Valerie (Joseph) Hadeed and Pamela (Michael) O’Steen; 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind three brothers, Leonard, Bill and Thurman Bruffey; and one sister, Mildred Bryant; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
Mr. Bruffey was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Haggerty Bruffey; his daughter, Christina M. Bruffey; and his sisters Susan Vestal and Cheryl Baker.
Raised in Kinston, NC; he is the son of the late Vernon J. and Martha M. Bruffey. Shortly after graduating from The University of North Carolina; he moved to Fairfax, Virginia where he worked and raised a family. He had a long career in computer programming and project management. Passionate about his faith, he obtained a Master of Arts in Religion from Liberty University and was involved in multiple ministries at Immanuel Bible Church in Springfield, Virginia. After retiring in 2004, he obtained a teaching certificate; teaching high school math in Fairfax County schools until 2010.
Moving to Kitty Hawk, NC in 2011; he enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, golf, kayaking, and reading his Bible. He was a member and deacon of Kitty Hawk Baptist Church, where he was active in their music and discipleship ministries. A life long lover of bluegrass music; he played the banjo, guitar and harmonica. He frequently hosted groups of other musicians, family and friends for an evening of pickin’ and grinnin’. He also helped to start a band called the Fret Knots with other members of his church family.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at Kitty Hawk Baptist Church starting with a viewing from 4-5pm and a service immediately following. Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 2pm at Elijah High Cemetery, Purgitsville, West Virginia.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Kitty Hawk Baptist Church, 3946 N Croatan Hwy, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949.
