Charles Leslie Smith
Nags Head- Charles “Chuck” Leslie Smith gained his wings to spread joy and laughter to the heavens above on November 9, 2017. Look for his “Pennies from Heaven.” He was born in Stow, Ohio, on August 3, 1932, (Leo the Lion), and was raised by Nellie and Harwood Skinner in Chardon, Ohio. He attended Tri-State College. A proud veteran, Chuck served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In business and sales all his life, he became co-owner of Cove Realty after moving to the Outer Banks 40 years ago. In later years, Chuck and Nancy enjoyed winters in Marathon, Florida. In recent years he loved his job as Warehouse Manager for Blivens Plumbing.
He was an avid boater and fisherman, a former volunteer fireman for the Nags Head Fire Department for many years, founding member of the Carolina Casters, and a member of the Elks (most recently in Marathon, FL). Chuck was a very grounded man and always had good advice for you or the situation at hand. He loved playing poker (thank you guys for Thursday nights), golf, slot machines (Casino Chuck), Saturday crab nights, and enjoyed NASCAR. He so enjoyed the sunrise and sunset and loved watching for the “green flash.” He loved the full moon and would open his wallet to the sky and yell out three times “Moon, fill my wallet.”
Chuck broke the mold and was one of a kind. He had no filters. He loved his costumes, and was always the life of the party. Chuck took joy in making people laugh. To have known him was to love him.
He leaves his beloved wife of 63 years, Nancy Barr Smith, his loving daughters, Sherrie (Rob) Blivens, and Leslie (Donny) Pietila; his cherished grandchildren, Sonya (Kris) Young, Alex Blivens, and Ryan Charles Pietila, and great-grandchildren Rylee, Keegan, and Nancy “Peaches” Young; his brother, William (Dorothy) Skinner, along with many nieces and nephews, and a large circle of friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Chuck on Saturday November 18, 2017 at Kelly’s Tavern in Nags Head from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. Please join us.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Chuck, please make donations to the Nags Head Fire Department, P.O. Box 99 Nags Head, N.C. 27959.
