Catherine T. “Irene” Gibbs

Kill Devil Hills – Mrs. Catherine T. “Irene” Gibbs passed away Sunday March 10, 2019 in Virginia Beach after a brief but serious illness. She was 82 and most knew her by her nickname “Irene”. Catherine was a naturalized US citizen born in Scotland. Fiercely independent, hardworking, and extremely generous, she devoted her life to serving others through her work with battered women and suicide prevention. Catherine was a longtime coordinator for the Suicide Crisis Prevention Hotline, a non-profit agency in Portsmouth, VA. She was a charter member of the Scottish Society of Tidewater.

She leaves behind her husband, Larry Wade Gibbs, her son, R. Wade Gibbs (Laura) of Chesapeake, her brother Doug Neilson (Elissa) of Florida, grandchildren Andrew Gibbs, Alexandra Hodges (Macon) and Catherine Gibbs, out of town relatives as well as numerous friends and coworkers throughout eastern North Carolina and Virginia. Irene was predeceased by her son, Bruce M. Gibbs.  A celebration of her life will be planned at a later date.
