  1. I had the pleasure of meeting Sylvia when I worked to East Carolina Bank with Roberta. I could see she was a very special mother and wife. May God hold this family close with many precious memories for memories are gifts from God to hold us close when the tugging of loss with our love one until we meet again.

Sylvia Gray Midgett

June 30, 2026

Sylvia Gray Midgett, 87, born in Avon, North Carolina, to the late Seymour and Sara Gray, passed away June 30, 2026 leaving behind a lifetime of love, memories, and family who will carry her spirit forward. Sylvia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, “Abby”, and her grandsons, Michael and Kobie Jakob.

Sylvia was a devoted wife to William A. Midgett Sr., and throughout her life she poured her heart into the people she loved. One of 17 children, Silvia was a beloved sister, cherished daughter, loving mother, proud grandmother, and treasured great-grandmother. To her family, and to so many friends who became family, she was affectionately known as “Mommom.” She had a special gift for making people feel cared for and welcomed. Her greatest joy came from watching her family grow and sharing in the moments, both big and small, that made life meaningful.

She is lovingly survived by her children, Joyce Waters (Randy), Roberta Midgett (Larry), Karen Jakob, and Abby Midgett (Sharon); Grandchildren, Eric, Tonya (Kellen), Kimi, Keela, Christen, Crystal, Johnathan, Nicholas, and Zachary; and great-grandchildren, Kameron, Daeson, Nita, Taylor, Riley, Simone, Destyn, Autumn, Mason, Gunnar, Curren, Karis, Ava, Kennedy and Bradley. Sylvia leaves behind generations who were shaped by her care, and who will continue to honor her through the stories they tell, and the traditions they keep. It’s true there is nothing sweeter than a Kinnakeeter.

Forever our Mommom. Forever loved.

Sylvia’s funeral will be held at 12pm on Monday, July 6, 2026 at St. John United Methodist Church in Avon. Friends and family may view one hour prior. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Interment will be private. Please leave a message of comfort at gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.
