Gallop recently earned qualification from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing Adult MHFA (Mental Health First Aid) Certification. The ALGEE protocol originated in Australia and is used nationally by counselors, government officials, teachers, medical workers, non-profit leaders, business professionals, and other interested persons to:
- -raise awareness around mental health and suicide.
- -destigmatize mental illness,
- -recognize signs and symptoms of mental distress, trauma, and crisis
- -approach, assess, and deescalate mental health crises
- -offer effective, nonjudgmental listening and compassionate support
- -Promote access to appropriate community resources and mental health professionals.
Gallop explained that she sought the training to have specialized tools for supporting families coping with complicated grief, trauma, mental illness, and the impacts of suicide in particular. The Dare County Health Department coordinated course administration. Kelly N. Fleming, MPA the Dare County Health Education & Outreach Supervisor led the training and issued the certifications. Fleming is a certified MHFA instructor with several years of experience with the ALGEE program components.
