      Mary Alice Smith

      September 5, 2026

Mary Alice Smith, 92, peacefully passed away at her home on September 5, 2026. Born May 17, 1934, in Roanoke, Virginia, Mary Alice was the sixth of eight children and the daughter of the late Christian and Ella Louise Wickham. She was preceded in death by her former husbands and the fathers of her children, James Anderson and Forest McMillan. She is survived by her five children, Ella Mae O’Sullivan, Brenda Kay Trivett, Kevin Anderson, Sandra Conrad, and Marshall McMillan; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister, Ann Clark; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Alice was a vivacious and caring soul, full of adventure, elegance, and love. She loved to travel and explore new places, enjoyed ballroom dancing, and had a natural appreciation for dressing beautifully and creating memorable surroundings. But as much as she loved adventure, she was happiest when surrounded by her family.

Throughout her life, Mary Alice used her time, talents, and resources to create unforgettable spaces and occasions for the people she loved. She had a gift for bringing people together and believed that life was meant to be celebrated. Her home was not simply a place to live, but a place where family gathered, memories were made, and love was shared. She was generous in both spirit and deed and took great joy in giving to those she loved.

Mary Alice worked as an Administrative Secretary at Lewis-Gale Medical Center and was also an accomplished and successful business owner of Appalachian Elkhorn Coal Company. Yet the roles she cherished most were those of mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved her family fervently and unconditionally and devoted herself to creating a life filled with connection, celebration, and lasting memories.

Mary Alice leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, adventure, and family. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. The funeral service will be held at First Church of Nazarene in Roanoke, VA Monday September 14, 2026 at noon. Burial will follow immediately at Evergreen Burial Park. Reverend Cameron Dunlop will officiate. Please share a message of comfort with the family at gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was entrusted with arrangements.

        OUR HISTORY

The Nags Head Chapel and Company Headquarters

        Nags Head Chapel

Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was founded in Nags Head, NC in 2006 by licensed North Carolina Funeral Director Courtney N. Gallop. This independent, minority and woman-owned start-up funeral home challenged the existing monopoly firm which had sole control of all funeral care, goods, and services provided in Manteo, the Outer Banks, and Currituck County for nearly 100 years.

Finally - someone brought competition into the local funeral industry. As a direct result of Gallop Funeral Services, Inc., local families now have choices, options, alternatives, fairer pricing, flexibility, and a higher level of service in funeral care for their loved ones.

The Barco Memorial Chapel - Currituck

        Barco Chapel

In 2016, Gallop Memorial Chapel was opened in Barco, NC. The spacious, newly remodeled facility is the first and only funeral service-related business ever to locate in Currituck County. The Barco Gallop Memorial Chapel is conveniently located near the Outer Banks, Moyock and Elizabeth City. The elegant yet relaxing chapel interior is welcoming and comfortable for viewings, family gatherings, funerals, and memorial services. Our Barco chapel is perfectly equipped to serve all faiths and families in the county.

Courtney Gallop and the staff at Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. are committed to excellence. We continue to improve, grow, invest, and learn in order to provide the highest level of service for all families entrusted to our care.

        Capital Crematory

        Capital Crematory

In 2011, we built and established Capital Crematory, the first and only crematory ever in Dare County. The crematory supports Gallop Funeral Services and also provides professional cremation services for other funeral homes in the Albemarle area. Having our own local crematory means your loved one's cremation will be handled personally by owners of the funeral home, 100% locally, quickly, and at the best pricing.
