Longtime Spring Arbor resident, Lucille Grove Levan entered her Father’s care peacefully August 14, 2026. She graced this earth for 101 years. Lucille was predeceased by her beloved son, Matt Tappero four years ago, as well as her husband Willis Levan; her parents, Raymond and Glena Grove; her siblings Mildred Grove Weems (Bliss), Whitney Grove (Doris), Conrad Grove (Nancy), Phyliss Grove Wright (Calvin), Jean Grove White (Harold), and Kenton Grove.

Lucille was born October 28,1924 in Waynesboro, Virginia. Growing up on a farm and tending her own horses for much of her life, Lucille became an accomplished rider. She often shared fond memories of horseback riding with her son as a young boy. Just days before her passing she was reminiscing about joyful rides with her daddy.

Following high school graduation, Lucille became the chief operator for three telephone companies. In her early 20’s Lucille struck out to Forest, VA. There she began 11 years of employment with various medical groups, which eventually led to her 20-year career at Meredith Burda- a printing company in Lynchburg, VA. Following her retirement from the printing business, Lucille settled in Southern Shores, NC to be close to her son, Matt.

Always vibrant and friendly, Lucille spent her post-retirement years working part-time for Beach Medical in Kitty Hawk. Lucille was also active in her church, All Saints Episcopal, where she sang in the choir, participated in services, and assisted with several other church activities. Lucille always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met. In addition to serving her church, Lucille passionately developed many talents. She became a proficient knitter - crafting beautiful sweaters, blankets, hats, and mittens. She loved baking cakes and cookies - becoming especially famous for her sugar cookies. Lucille was also a gardener- both indoors and out; and enjoyed wine making; singing in choirs and choruses; raising dogs, and, taking her daily walk for as long as she was physically able.

Lucille’s survivors include her devoted daughter-in-law, Denice Tappero who comforted Lucille until the moment of her departure; a daughter-in law Theresa Levan; three grandchildren, whom she adored: Morgan Tappero Gaffney (Joseph), Katie Kilgore (Travis), Chirs Levan; and one great grandchild, Mackenzie Kilgore. Lucille is also survived by the last of her seven siblings, Carroll Grove (Judy), and numerous beloved nieces and nephews; other relatives, extended family members, her church family and her Spring Arbor family.

Family and close friends are invited to join, as we remember and celebrate Lucille's life on Saturday October 17 at 11:00 AM at All Saints Episcopal Church in Southern Shores, NC. Lucille’s extended family will gather privately to honor, remember, and share cherished memories and stories to celebrate the beautiful life she shared with them.  Please share a word of encouragement with Denice and the family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com. Dear Denice, Thanks So very much for sending this message my way. May angels wrap their wings of loving consolation around you & carry you as you might need. I believe you literally loved Lucille into heaven, where I imagine Matt & the other saints in her life most dear to her welcomed her. I will forever be grateful to her & to Matt for giving me the chance to buy her beautiful house. I will watch for whatever may yet unfold re a service of remembrance. Lucille was a beautiful person and an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.

So many fond and fun memories of Ciley-Weelie (as I called her). I met her soon after moving here 31 years ago. She was so amazing that it's a shock to see she wasn't going to live forever! Thank you Denice for always being a wonderful DIL to her.

During my 9 years at All Saints as Fr. Tom Wilson's administrative assistant, sweet Lucille was an almost daily visitor in the church office as she went on her daily morning walks. Her humor and our conversations got my day off to a start full of smiles and happiness. We kept in touch even after my retirement and went to lunch and then shopped for the special items she needed. Her friendship was a blessing. You are always with me, Lucille.

Thoughts and prayers for the family. Lucille was a wonderful lady. She loved playing bingo. She had a sharp mind and a strong determination. I have known her for many years at Spring Arbor. Rest in peace!

I will miss her and the good times we shared.

I cherish that we really became family when Matt and Denice married. We shared a beautiful grandchild, Morgan. So thankful for all that we have shared over the years. You are missed. Rest in peace Lucille.

Cille has been a light in my life since the early 90’s when we worked together at Beach Medical. Later, she would give me the VIP treatment whenever I would call her for medical records. Finally, we met up again at All Saints Episcopal Church. She would always say that the secret to her long and healthy life was her daily walks. I think she was on to something! Cille, I’ll miss your smile and positive attitude. Condolences to her family.

Dear Denice and family, we loved Lucille so much - she always had a smile and a good word for everyone. Lucille was a walker, making the loop on Ginguite and S. Dogwood and then at Spring Arbor almost every day as long as she could. She used to encourage me to walk more! We always loved to see her at church and she was involved in many activities there. We send our deepest condolences and will miss her very much. Carole and Gary

She was a nice lady. So glad I had a chance to meet her a few years ago. Denice my heart goes out to you and those who loved her. I have to believe she is in a much better place. God bless her and those who loved her.

Aunt Cile was a beautiful lady in every way. A woman of great faith and generoaity, she was a marvelous inspiration and role model. We will miss her presence while being so grateful for her long and adventuresome life. Denice has been such a blessing to Cile and our family is so appreciative. We love you Denice❣️
