George G. Whitley, Jr. age 76 of Nags Head, NC, passed away on October 14, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, George G. Whitley, Sr. and Edna Mumford Whitley. Those who knew him well remember his keen wit, warmth, and kind-hearted manner; always willing to lend an attentive ear in conversation. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather and brother.
George loved history and enjoyed keeping abreast of current events by reading his three daily newspapers: The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Virginian Pilot. He was a talented and skilled carpenter who shared his gifts by building homes in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In his later years, his work at the Napa Auto Parts Store in Manteo, NC rendered him the opportunity to meet many new friends where he was affectionately known as “Napa George.” Working at Napa in Manteo brought George much joy. He cared deeply for his co-workers and for all of his customers.
George loved his morning bike rides and in his earlier years, a quick swim in the ocean before work. He and his wife Marge and he enjoyed watching professional and college football and especially college basketball. George enjoyed cursing at any team playing against the Tarheels. As his daughters Sarah and Morgan grew up on the OBX, boating, crabbing and fishing together with their dad, many lifelong memories were created. They also played many games of putt-putt. Watching his girls play recreational league sports and cheerleading and later school sports brought him much joy. He continued this love as a proud spectator by watching his granddaughter Addison play volleyball and basketball at Manteo Middle School and later, Manteo High School. “Papa” tried not to miss a game!
George is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marge Whitley Whitley; his daughters, Sarah and Morgan Whitley; his granddaughter, Addison Sawyer; his brother, David Whitley (Betty); his sister, Donna Patrick (David); his brother-in-law, Carter Whitley (Fair) and his sister-in-law Katie Sloan (Gary Starr); and many beloved nieces and nephews.
George loved being a part of his daughters’ and granddaughter’s lives. He was an amazing father and grandfather and participated in their activities whenever he could. They were a great source of love and pride for him.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in honor of George’s nephew Josh Sloan to Sportable, 1365 Overbrook Rd., Suite 2, Richmond, VA 23220 or Sportable.org for online donations. (Sportable is a non-profit adaptive sports organization.)
Plans for George’s celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Please share expressions of love and sympathy with the Whitley family at www.gallopfuneralservices.com . Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was entrusted with arrangements.

Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was founded in Nags Head, NC in 2006 by licensed North Carolina Funeral Director Courtney N. Gallop. This independent, minority and woman-owned start-up funeral home challenged the existing monopoly firm which had sole control of all funeral care, goods, and services provided in Manteo, the Outer Banks, and Currituck County for nearly 100 years.
Finally - someone brought competition into the local funeral industry. As a direct result of Gallop Funeral Services, Inc., local families now have choices, options, alternatives, fairer pricing, flexibility, and a higher level of service in funeral care for their loved ones.

In 2016, Gallop Memorial Chapel was opened in Barco, NC. The spacious, newly remodeled facility is the first and only funeral service-related business ever to locate in Currituck County. The Barco Gallop Memorial Chapel is conveniently located near the Outer Banks, Moyock and Elizabeth City. The elegant yet relaxing chapel interior is welcoming and comfortable for viewings, family gatherings, funerals, and memorial services. Our Barco chapel is perfectly equipped to serve all faiths and families in the county.
Courtney Gallop and the staff at Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. are committed to excellence. We continue to improve, grow, invest, and learn in order to provide the highest level of service for all families entrusted to our care.

In 2011, we built and established Capital Crematory, the first and only crematory ever in Dare County. The crematory supports Gallop Funeral Services and also provides professional cremation services for other funeral homes in the Albemarle area. Having our own local crematory means your loved one's cremation will be handled personally by owners of the funeral home, 100% locally, quickly, and at the best pricing.
