      Arthur Leslie Ellis, III

      September 2, 2026

Arthur Leslie Ellis III, affectionately known to all as "Buddy", passed away peacefully at his home in Poplar Branch, North Carolina, on September 2, 2026. He was 75 and bravely battled cancer.

Buddy was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Oct 28, 1950 to the late Arthur Leslie Ellis, Jr and Lucille Mayward Batkins. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan, and his cherished stepson, Richard "Little Buddy."

A true outdoorsman through and through, Buddy lived for the water, the marsh, and the blind. From his first hunt at Lake Mattamuskeet at age 14, to shooting doves at the Raleigh Deer Club, chasing Pintails at Pamlico Point, Redheads at Ocracoke, and puddle ducks and Snow Geese at the mouth of Taylor's Creek on Currituck Sound; hunting was the pulse of his life. As soon as he retired, Buddy made his home in Poplar Branch, living his best life as a genuine Currituck sportsman- eventually acquiring and proudly maintaining his own waterfowl blind at Thoroughfare. His days were filled with duck-hunting, fishing, taxidermy, collecting citations from the Wildlife Commission, and naming all of his dogs "Joe".

Buddy was a man of his word who never made an enemy. He leaves a wide circle of friends who will miss his quirky sense of humor, quick wit, and his uncanny ability to tell the tallest tales with a completely straight face.

Buddy is survived by a host of devoted friends whose lives are permanently shaped by his generous spirit and companionship. They look forward to gathering with friends and family to share memories and celebrate Buddy's life. Details regarding the memorial will be shared soon.

        OUR HISTORY

The Nags Head Chapel and Company Headquarters

        Nags Head Chapel

Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was founded in Nags Head, NC in 2006 by licensed North Carolina Funeral Director Courtney N. Gallop. This independent, minority and woman-owned start-up funeral home challenged the existing monopoly firm which had sole control of all funeral care, goods, and services provided in Manteo, the Outer Banks, and Currituck County for nearly 100 years.

Finally - someone brought competition into the local funeral industry. As a direct result of Gallop Funeral Services, Inc., local families now have choices, options, alternatives, fairer pricing, flexibility, and a higher level of service in funeral care for their loved ones.
