Robert L. “Larry” Ambrose
Manns Harbor, NC – Robert Larry Ambrose, a lifelong resident of Manns Harbor and beloved member of the Outer Banks community, passed away of natural causes in Norfolk on October 28, 2025. He was 83.
Known to all simply as Larry, he was a man whose presence could light up a room – his storytelling, easy smile, and kind spirit made him a cherished friend and neighbor to generations. A true staple of the Manns Harbor community, Larry’s life was marked by quiet dedication, hard work, and an unwavering warmth that touched everyone he met.
For more than 60 years, Larry was a familiar and welcoming face at White’s, where he became much more than an employee, he was family to his coworkers and customers alike. His stories, laughter, and steady presence became part of the very fabric of the place, and his memory will continue to echo through every friendly greeting and fond recollection shared there.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Peggy Taylor Ambrose, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. He is survived by his daughter, Sonya Ambrose Crawford; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson, each of whom carries forward his gentle humor and generous heart.
Honoring Larry’s wishes for simplicity, the family will observe his preference for cremation, and no services are planned.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Larry’s name to the Manns Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, a cause close to his heart and reflective of his lifelong commitment to his community.
Please leave a message of comfort at gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.

I am sorry to hear of Larry's passing. He worked for our family for over 60 years. He was a part of our family. Larry was a great cook and prepared a number of the lunch specials served at the store. I think that he loved my mother as much as I did. He always helped her prepare the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals served at our home. It's difficult to remember a time in my life when Larry wasn't around the store. He was a good man and he will be missed.
