Mark was quite the radio jockey in high school and would keep us in tears with his own version of any song that played. He was always up for a road trip after school frequenting the 7-11 or burger joint for a tide-me-over with friends before practice or games. He entertained the whole time!

I never thought that the last time I spoke with Marko… a couple weeks ago when he was in the hospital, would be the last time. You were so looking forward to getting back behind the mic.   20. I’m shocked at the loss of a great guy! I was the Public Affairs Manager at the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City for almost 6 years. My radio was always tuned to the Shark, as I not only loved their music, but loved Hearing Mark there as well. He was always a positive man, and I enjoyed seeing him at all the live events he hosted all through the area. I now live outside of Pittsburgh, but I get down in the area often, and i always tune in to hear what Mark is up to. He will be sorely missed by so many people, and I am proud to have called him my friend.

  25. I live in Washington, NC. For many years I listened to “Marko in the morning” and really enjoyed his show. His one of a kind voice and radio wit made my mornings great. I met him in July 2017 at Jimmy’s Seafood Restaurant when he was doing a live remote there. I was blown away, not what I ever expected. But it was a highlight of my OBX vacation. He was very polite and took the time to speak with me. He will be greatly missed and mornings will never be the same. You and the rest of his family are in our prayers. He gained his wings and has flown to Heaven but he will never be forgotten and “Marko in the mornings” will never be the same. May God bless your family.

  29. I first met Mark around 1982 when I was working for WKJX in Elizabeth City. We actually lived together for a short time and were very compatible roommates. And ask Marko to play a Beach Boy song for him. And sometimes Marko would say Logan’s name over the radio as who ask for the song. That would make his day to hear his name on the radio. It is simple things like that makes Marko a fan favorite DJ. A Beach Boy song that comes to mind that might being fitting for Marko – I Get Around.

Mark H. Johnston

Nags Head- Mark H. Johnston died tragically in Currituck County September 1, 2022 at the age of 57. He was born in Norfolk, VA May 28,1965 and was preceded in death by his father Earl H. Johnston.

Mark or “Marco” or “Mark St. John” as he was lovingly known throughout the Outer Banks, was a popular and well-known local radio personality for years. He was a morning talk radio host on 102.5 “The Shark” and hosted “Marco In The Morning.”  Marco’s smooth voice and jovial personality interconnected the local beach communities in countless ways over the span of his career.

Mark is survived by his mother, Rosa “Stevie” Leary Northwood of Elizabeth City, NC; two uncles, Wayne Leary (wife, Fay); and Christopher Leary (wife, Patricia) all of Shawboro, NC; other relatives; his radio family; and countless friends.

The family will honor Marco’s preference for cremation. A private memorial gathering will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, Marco’s family gratefully suggests that memorial donations in his honor be made directly to Interfaith Community Outreach (ICO) PO Box 1663 Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 or at www.interfaithoutreach.com.   Please share condolences with the family via the online register at www.gallopfuneralservices.com.
