Kay Felton Stephenson

March 15, 2025

With great sadness, my sister and I announce the passing of our mother, Catheryn “Kay” Felton Stephenson, on Saturday, March 15, 2025. Born on December 10, 1936, she passed away peacefully at her home in Duck, NC, surrounded by love, with her daughter, Karen, and son, Craig, by her side.

Kay lived a long and fulfilling life. The youngest of three children, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Billy Felton and Stanfield Felton, as well as her parents, Jessie Stanfield Felton and W.T. Felton.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Props, and son, Craig Stephenson; her grandsons, Andrew Props and his wife, Amber, and Michael Props and his fiancée, Elizabeth Ferris; and her favorite grandchild, Raleigh-the-Dog.

Born and raised in Fayetteville, NC, Kay graduated from Fayetteville High School before attending Women’s College (WC) in Greensboro. In the years that followed, she held various administrative jobs before dedicating herself to being an exceptional homemaker. Ever enterprising and possessing impeccable taste, she pursued numerous side ventures, from writing the social news for The Altavista Journal to working at Back Street, a clothing store, The Loft, an art supply shop, and English’s as a home decorating consultant. She remained engaged in creative and social endeavors throughout her life.

Kay had a passion for travel and exploring new places, visiting nearly 30 U.S. states and 11 countries. In 2018, she embarked on a meaningful pilgrimage to Israel with her then-minister, John Tyson, for whom she had great respect and affection.

For the last 15 years of her life, Kay called Duck, NC, home—a place she cherished. She was an active member of Duck United Methodist Church for many years until the COVID pandemic, after which she was unable to attend regularly. A generous supporter of numerous causes and organizations, she gave quietly, never seeking recognition.

In the end, Mom faced death with quiet courage, unwavering resolve, and even a touch of humor—like the true Southern Lady she was.

Her ashes will be laid to rest at Green Hill Cemetery in Altavista, VA—the town she loved most among all the places she called home over her 88 years.
