Fred Henry Hampton, Jr.
Fred Henry Hampton, Jr. “Freddy” Passed away unexpectedly of natural causes at home in Aydlett, NC on Sunday, November 10, 2024. Freddy was born October 2, 1969 at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City, NC. A lifelong resident of Currituck County, his formative years were spent guiding duck hunters over winter break and summers manning a lifeguard tower.
Blessed with his mothers smile and outgoing personality and his father’s charisma, he knew no stranger. A patient listener with an uncanny memory for names and faces, it is no small wonder his circle of friends grew far and wide.
Freddy graduated with the class of 1987 from Manteo High School, Manteo, NC. In short order his career trajectory was set and in the spring of 1992, he began as a Patrolman with the Kill Devil Hills Police Department, Kill Devil Hills, NC. Fulfilled with the work he set out upon his next goal and completed the 32nd NC Wildlife Enforcement Officer Basic Training School at the NC Justice Academy, Chapel Hill, NC on April 26th, 1996. Although his first posting was Brunswick County, he eventually made his way back to his native Currituck County where he would spend the majority of his 15 year tenure.
Freddy was deployed on September 12, 2001 to the waters surrounding Lower Manhattan with USCGR Port Security Unit 305 in the wake of the terror attack on the World Trade Center. Six months later his unit was deployed once again attached to Joint Task Force 160 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He completed his service with a final deployment to Greece, Spain, and Gibraltar in 2003 before being honorably discharged as a PS-4 in 2004. A personal protection detail for Blackwater USA to Baghdad in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005 marked his entry into the private sector. The years that followed included countless training details to all corners of the globe. From US tier-one operators and allied nation military members to foreign diplomats, he has taught his unique skill set to all types in all locales. His travels professionally and personally included foreign countries too numerous to count. His most recent being a vacation to Eastern Europe with his son, Cole. The common thread throughout his professional career was public service at every possible level. A life well lived and a legacy worth preserving.
Above any professional accolades, his greatest point of pride and source of joy was his only child, Cole. From Cole’s birth until Freddy’s final days not one second was squandered nor opportunity missed. Freddy was mission-driven and front sight focused on being the best father possible. The bond that formed between father and son was unrivaled as was his love and pride for Cole and his accomplishments. As a father, friend, family member, or coworker none more loyal or dependable existed. He will be sorely missed by many.
Freddy was a current member of Chickahominy Masonic Lodge #286 Toana, Virginia.
Freddy is survived by his son, Cole Hampton of Currituck, NC; mother, Molly Griggs of Nags Head, NC; father, Fred Hampton, Sr of Morehead City, NC (Shawn); and brothers, Walt Hampton of Nags Head, NC and Grant Hampton of Morehead City, NC. He is also survived by his uncle, Butch Hampton (Kim) of Elizabeth City, NC; his aunt, Linda Weatherington (Robert); niece, Sophie Hampton of Asheville, NC; cousin, Suzy Dubel of Walnut Cove, NC and friends and family too numerous to list.
He was preceded in death by his uncle, Joe Hampton and cousin, Amanda Hampton.
Freddy’s Memorial Service will be held at 11am, Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at Powells Point Christian Church, 197 Church Road, Harbinger, NC. Pastor Vince Rodkey to officiate. A private family burial will be held in the Hampton family cemetery at a future date.
In lieu of flower charitable donations can be made to The Wounded Warrior Project. (http://woundedwarriorproject.org) or Powells Point Christian Church 197 Church Road, Harbinger, NC 27941. Please leave a message of hope at gallopfuneralservices.com. Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.

I wanted to offer my condolences to the family. Freddy or what ever body called him (pop up Freddy) was my training officer from July 2004 to Jan 2005 in currituck county. Me and Freddy hit off from the first time I met him. I had worked in (Hertford County) Ahoskie as a pd officer for 4 years and he had worked with kill devil hills pd. He also had worked in hertford county as a game warden before going to currituck county. I went to hertford county to work after training and have been there my whole career. We were also close in age. Freddy was only 2 years older than me. We had an awesome time together and he taught me a lot and maybe I taught him something to. Freddy was a real game warden and really loved his job. I hated it when he left the agency. I just saw him this summer at Coinjock access area while I was there working with the currituck officer. It was good to catch up with him. Little did I know it would be the last time I would see or talk to him. He still called me by my nickname that he gave me(Huggie Bear).😂 Just know I thought the world of Freddy and will not forget all the things he taught me and I will never forget him. Rest in peace my brother!!! Love u man!!
I developed a friendship with Freddy over the past two decades. He was a friendly face and a trusted soul that I could confide in with life's challenges. He was always willing to lend an ear or a helping hand. I enjoyed spending time with him in a shared interest and witnessed his fatherly instruction and his sincere love for his son Cole. My heart breaks for his family and the hole that he leaves behind. I pray that God comforts all those who knew and loved Freddy.
To the Hampton Family, my deepest condolences to you in this moment of unexpected loss. I only had a few brief years of friendship with Freddy, I grew to appreciate his gentle but firm approach to life. I truly loved being his neighbor and will always be grateful to have been a friend. Warmest regards Robert

Sad day today hearing about the passing of Freddy Hampton. A really happy man with a contageous smile, and up-beat about everything I'd ever chatted with him about. What a gift to have crossed paths with this warm individual. I met Fred through a friend and fellow surfer, Ted Kearns in the early nineties. After driving our weekly trip to the Outer banks from NY, my wife and I would head out for breakfast. Often we'd stop by Bob's Eat And Get The Hell Out and Fred would be seated at a large round table with many of his Law Enforcement friends enjoying food and company. He never missed the opportunity to say hi, ask how the drive went, and left you feeling that he would be as sincere as if had we been seated with his colleagues. There are those people that get your attention and every once and a while you wonder what ever happened to them. I had hoped for more opportunities to chat and catch up with him again but sadly we only have so much time. I'll remember funny experiences we'd had regarding some thinly veiled race cars that I used to commute with. I feel lucky to have had the chance to have his life cross mine. R.I.P
Will miss your influence!
