Alvin S. Hibbs

Nags Head- On Friday, January 11, 2013, Alvin S. Hibbs “Crossed the Bar,” as it must be for all men, and death came to Captain Alvin Stanley Hibbs, US Navy (Retired). Captain Hibbs was born in Everett, Massachusetts in 1925. In April of 1942, he left Everett to begin a thirty-one year military career in the United States Navy. Captain Hibbs served aboard various amphibious ships during the WW II missions of North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, and southern France. Captain Hibbs was appointed an NROTC midshipman in October 1944. He matriculated at Pennsylvania State University where he was graduated and commissioned in June of 1947. He reported to Pensacola, FL for his Navy flight training. Captain Hibbs was designated a Naval Aviator in January 1950. He spent the next twenty-three years serving in that capacity within the Anti-submarine Warfare Specialty.

Captain Hibbs was twice awarded the Legion of Merit award for his work in ASW operations during the Cold War years. From 1960 to 1963, Captain Hibbs served on the Tufts University NROTC Staff as Assistant Professor of Naval History. During that period, Captain Hibbs earned a Masters degree from the University.

Upon retirement, Captain Hibbs joined the faculty of the Virginia Beach Campus of Tidewater Community College. There, he served as an Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of Community Education until his retirement in 1981.

Captain Hibbs has lived in Nags Head since 1980 and was active in town and county government. He served on the Nags Head Citizens Advisory Committee, and the Nags Head Planning Board. Captain Hibbs completed many years of service as the Chairman of the Nags Head Board of Adjustment. He also served as a member of the Dare County Airport Authority and the Board of Equalization and Review.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, Katherine, Captain Hibbs is survived by his daughters, Sheryl Boyle and her husband Gary of Valrico, FL, and Ivy Oliasami and her husband Jeffrey of Ponte Vedra, FL, his sons, Marc Hibbs and his wife Margaret Miller of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Kevin Hibbs and his wife Donna of Antelope, CA. In addition, he leaves six grandchildren and scores of other relatives in the Boston area.

The family will receive friends at the Gallop Funeral Services Chapel, MP 16 in Nags Head, NC on Thursday January 17, 2013 from 4 pm to 7 pm. Interment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Captain Alvin S. Hibbs, US Navy (Ret) may be forwarded to Dare County Home Health and Hospice, PO Box 100 Manteo, NC 27954.
